Bridges: £63M railway crossing is capital’s largest borough-lead road project

 
The largest London borough-led road project was opened to traffic last week. The Westminster council-led £63M Paddington Bridge upgrade, which involved introducing a wider, higher, bridge over 14 railway lines, posed a number of engineering challenges. Traditional foundations had to be eschewed in favour of reinforced earth embankments to reduce the load on the Bakerloo line running only 15m to the north, said Sally Sunderland, project manager for main contractor, Hochtief.
