Bridge set to play strategic future role

The existing Forth Bridge will be made a dedicated public transport-only corridor, as part of Scotland’s multi-billion-pound transport plan for the next 20 years.

The Strategic Transport Projects Review was published this week, and details 29 major transport investment priorities across Scotland.

A new strategy for a toll-free £1.72-£2.34bn replacement Forth crossing will deliver a £1.7bn reduction on original cost estimates, while the existing Forth Bridge will only be open to public transport from 2016.

Other schemes include upgrades to the A96; a Nairn bypass; a new Inveramsay Bridge; and new connection between A9 and A96. A programme of improvements for the A9 include upgrading to dual carriageway standard between Perth and Inverness.

A new national integrated ticketing scheme allowing people to travel across all public transport using just one ticket is also part of proposals.
