Bridge contractor nurtures replacement wildlife habitat

A new habitat the size of 10 football pitches has been specially created to replace a Special Protection Area which will be lost by construction of the new Upper Forth Crossing.

Contractor Morgan VINCI completed work on creating a new habitat area which, over a period of time, will provide new feeding, roosting and nesting grounds for protected bird species such as Dunlin and Redshanks at the site of the new crossing. Construction of the new bridge affected a small area of approximately 0.8ha of special habitat.

As part of the compensation for this, around 8ha of new habitat is being created at Kennet Pans. Steven Brown, Transport Scotland project manager, said: ‘Respect for the environment has been a key issue at all times in delivering this much-needed bridge.’
