Bournemouth’s shingle-minded determination to safeguard beach

A beach replenishment scheme for Bournemouth’s 11 kilometres of seafront will keep the area sandy, according to the council. Press reports had suggested the ‘golden sands’ in the area would be lost and replaced with shingle.
However, Bournemouth Borough Council said this week the shingle visible on some sections of the foreshore was only ‘temporary’, and would be covered with sand. A spokesman said: ‘The beach-replenishment programme currently under way is a routine and normal process to preserve our famous sandy beaches for the future. ‘The programme is not designed to replace sand with shingle – nor is it doing so. While some patches of shingle can particularly be found at the far eastern end of Bournemouth, at Southbourne, this is not a permanent fixture.’
