Bosses spell it out to residents as battle for Leamonsley turns sour

Highway bosses at Staffordshire County Council are feeling smug this week after a long-running battle with residents over what was claimed to be a wrongly-spelt sign was revealed to be correct all along.
Lichfield residents and highways chiefs have been at loggerheads over signs for Leomansley, which residents claim have wrongly been written as Leamonsley. Two signs on roundabouts leading into the area have seen numerous protests by residents who claimed the error made the area a ‘laughing stock’ around the county. However, records dating from the 1880s show Leomansley was originally spelt Leamonsley, with the current spelling only becoming common after the Second World War.
A council spokesman confirmed the name as featured on the signs was historically correct and added the council was appealing to local people to help with more information.
