Bosses on board as Metrolink upgrade gathers momentum

Cllr Roger Jones, chair of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, and Trafford transport spokesperson, Cllr Matt Colledge, joined the first passengers to travel on the new Metrolink track when the Altrincham line reopened this week.

GMPTA is investing more than £100M on improvements to the Metrolink network, including new trams, stop upgrades and ticket machines. Almost 20 miles of track on the Bury and Altrincham lines have been replaced during the summer, and platform surfaces have been upgraded to make it easier to get on and off the trams. The Bury Metrolink line is currently closed up to Manchester Victoria and is due to reopen in mid-September.

The work to upgrade the network has been carried out by Carillion plc. Engineers have laid at least 40 miles of rail, 60,000t of gravel and 40,000 sleepers on the Bury and Altrincham lines. They have also renovated the Metrolink bridge over the M60, and replaced a bridge on Withins Lane in Radcliffe.
