Businesses in Wales have called for more action to be taken to speed up delivery of a promised national transport strategy for the principality.
In a letter to Welsh transport minister, ~Andrew Davies~, Chamber Wales – representing Wales’ chambers of commerce – warns that a delay in releasing proposals could restrict the ability of interested parties to get involved. Chairman, Paul Rutter, was concerned that the draft, which was due to be published by May, would now emerge during the summer holiday period. Chambers of commerce are pushing for a sustained commitment to above inflation-linked increases on transport infrastructure, which they believe is required to deliver real improvements. But a Welsh Assembly spokesman said it was misleading to suggest that there had been a delay, given the fact that the Transport (Wales) Act 2006, paving the way for it, only came into force on 26 May. He said the draft strategy to provide a 25-year framework would be published for a full three-month consultation this summer. He added that, since 1999, the assembly government had invested a substantial amount to develop a first-rate integrated transport system.
