Borough staff get a compulsory lesson in the dangers facing bikers

Training classes to make drivers aware of the dangers their vehicles pose to cyclists are being made compulsory for all London Borough of Lambeth council staff who drive as part of their job.

The council started running cycle-awareness sessions last year for staff who drive HGVs, such as refuse collection workers. Now, drivers of all council vehicles, including cars, will undertake the training as part of a rolling programme starting this month.

Classroom sessions will see drivers taught how to anticipate how cyclists will behave on the road, and how to minimise the risk of collision.

The drivers will also be given the opportunity to get on bikes themselves, and be given practical off-road and on-road cycle training.

The initiatives have been developed as part of Lambeth’s updated workplace travel plan, which seeks to make Lambeth staff travel in a more sustainable and safe manner.
