Borough signs up Veolia as preferred bidder for 25-year deal

London Borough of Southwark has selected Veolia Environmental Services as preferred bidder for its 25-year integrated waste-management contract.
The council was swayed by Veolia’s proposal for a fully-integrated strategy for recycling and recovery, involving a new mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plant, municipal depot, materials recovery facility (MRF) and a household waste recycling and recovery centre (HWRRC). The facilities will be located at the former gas works site on the Old Kent Road.
The proposals also leave the door open for further innovative waste-processing technologies. Southwark secured PFI funding of £34.5M in 2005 for a 25-year integrated contract, which aims to recycle half of all rubbish and divert three-quarters of its expected 205,000 tonnes of waste away from landfill by 2020. The contract is expected to start in October.
