Borough launches third weekly waste collection service

The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea is to upgrade its waste service from two collections a week to three, thanks to a new computer-designed waste-collection rota.

The former rota, drawn using crayons and a laminated map, had changed little since 1965, when the boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea were joined together.

However, earlier this year, the borough’s waste-management contractor, SITA, bought some routing and scheduling software in a bid to rebalance the crews’ workloads to make them safer and fairer, and to explore the potential for efficiency savings.

Cllr Nicholas Paget-Brown, cabinet member for environmental services, said: ‘Incredibly, the new rotas will use the same resources as the old rotas – the technology has identified savings which a human brain was simply unable to calculate.’
