Boris’ bendy bus ban begins with route 507

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has taken the first bendy buses off the capital’s roads and confirmed the full fleet of 396 would be gone by 2011.

The nine bendy buses which operated on Route 507 – from Waterloo to Victoria – have been decommissioned and replaced by 15 new, single-deck buses.

Mr Johnson said: ‘Bendy buses on other routes are on borrowed time and I can confirm they will all have gone by 2011.’ A new weekend service on the route means buses will be more regular – at a frequency of every three to four minutes at peak times instead of every five minutes.

Bendy buses were first introduced on to London’s streets in 2002, and Mr Johnson made it part of his manifesto pledge to reverse this decision over safety concerns.
