Board offers £10M for hi-tech solutions to traffic congestion

Ten million pounds in funding is on offer from the Technology Strategy Board to encourage the use of innovative equipment to ease traffic congestion and improve disaster management.

The board has set a 4 April deadline for outline proposals of research projects to improve the collection of data on traffic management, road maintenance and pollution monitoring, as well as disaster mitigation and response.

Chief executive, Iain Gray, said: ‘The ability to gather information in difficult environments is vital for organisations such as the emergency services, transport authorities and power companies.’

The board believes that without up-to-date and reliable data, it is difficult to predict the dynamics of rapid environmental change or improve operating efficiency for local authorities and utility companies, as well as for the police, fire and emergency services.

Thursday 8 May is the final closing date for detailed research proposals.
