Blueprint for tidal scheme to protect Hull hits barrier

Work on a massive tidal barrier to protect Hull has been forced back to the drawing board because of design problems.

The flood-hit city already has a hydraulic barrier protecting it from rising coastal waters.

However, the 30-year-old barrier needs vital restoration work to its mechanics. And now, plans to carry it out have been set back by 12 months, because of problems with the designs.

Yorkshire regional flood defence committee, made up of local authority members and government appointees, has decided to spend the £2M set aside on urgent repairs instead.

Chairman Jeremy Walker said: ‘We have had to postpone our work until next year because of the extra design time needed.

‘So the money – set aside for the refurbishment – is going to be used to carry out urgent repair work.’

The work can only be carried out during the summer months and the window of opportunity this year was missed because the designs were not ready.

The decision comes as lawyers for the residents of homes in Liversedge, near Dewsbury in West Yorkshire, flooded over the summer, consider landmark legal action against the developers and the local planning authority for building their properties on a flood plain.
