Blackpool plans £2.6M repairs to footways

Blackpool Council is set to spend £2.6M on the town’s footways, to help reduce the backlog of repairs.

The work will aim to reduce accidents by the public and cut the cost of claims made against the council, as well as improve the streetscene.

The proposal, expected to be agreed this week, follows a pilot carried out in South Shore, where £157,000 more than paid for itself in terms of the reduced cost of claims.

Cllr Ian Fowler, deputy leader at Blackpool, said: ‘We are determined to improve the town, and this proposal will make a real difference and avoid injuries to the public. ‘This is a common sense approach to a problem which has gone on for too long.’

He said that, while the number of claims had reduced in Blackpool, the cost of settling each claim had gone up thanks to the claims firms’ profits. There will be two ‘gangs’ dedicated to the maintenance work, which is expected to take place in 2008/09.
