Bin collection thrown out of kilter as fuel costs rocket

Wrexham County Borough Council is the latest authority to overhaul services to combat rising fuel prices.

The council has undergone major changes to bin collections starting this week, meaning 60% of households will have their bin collected on a different day.

The changes will knock 1,000 miles per fortnight off the bin route – reducing the authority's carbon footprint. The council says the revised collection routes have been necessary to improve efficiency and meet the demands of new housing developments.

The rising price of oil, petrol and diesel have increased the cost to councils of providing local services by £239M in the last two years, according to recent research by the Local Government Association (Surveyor, 10 July 2008). In 2006/2007, councils spent £541M on fuel costs to run their fleets, and in this financial year, costs are expected to soar to £780M, if prices stay at the current level.
