Bill proposals ‘will give bus passengers a voice’

Plans to give bus passengers across England a more influential voice under the Local Transport Bill have started to take shape.

Transport operators, unions, existing passenger bodies, and consumer and voluntary organisations came together to discuss creating a ‘bus passenger champion’ as part of consultation into the Bill.

Transport minister, Rosie Winterton, said the champion would make sure passengers’ interests were represented when important decisions were being made, and would push for high-quality services everywhere.

The Local Transport Bill going through parliament includes measures to create the first formal champion for bus passengers. Cat Hobbs, from the Campaign for Better Transport, who organised the meeting, said she could not go into details but added that the group had reached consensus on a number of issues.
