Biker plan taken on board by tram firm

Trams in Edinburgh are set to be the first in the UK to allow cyclists to carry their bikes on board. Transport Edinburgh Limited has agreed to a trial period, once the £512M line has been in operation for about 12 months.

The scheme is due to be completed in 2011. Gary Bell, a spokesman for cycling campaign group Spokes, which has been lobbying for the move, said: ‘We are delighted. This shows an element of transport integration and is a logical way for people to travel in the 21st century.’

TEL’s Alastair Richards said: ‘We are committed to off-peak trials as soon as usage reaches a steady state, with sufficient experience built up and a quick system for safe retention of bicycles has been devised and approved for trials in public operation.’
