In 2005 there was the biggest hike in the distance travelled by those questioned in the national travel survey for three years running, up by two per cent.
The average distance travelled by a person in a year was 7,208 miles, compared to 7,103 the year before, and 6,981 a decade ago. The time taken to travel also saw the biggest jump for three years, up from 382 to 385 hours.
The average distance travelled by bus in London rose by 13% in just one year, and has increased by more than half since 1996.
