Big bus boost for Glasgow with signing of ‘stability pact’

Glasgow City Council and bus operator First Group have signed an unprecedented ‘stability and growth pact’, in a bid to improve the city’s bus services.
Together with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, the council and First will be required to publish an annual route development plan covering Greater Glasgow.
This will limit any changes to bus timetables to one a year. The two will also develop a joint performance improvement plan to make significant progress in punctuality and reliability.
The pact aims to achieve sustained growth in bus passenger numbers of 4% each year, while being committed to affordable fares.
The deal also includes long-term plans to introduce more park-and-ride initiatives, additional bus-priority routes, improved security measures, and the use of smart cards for integrated ticketing. The new 20-point plan is the first of its kind in the UK.
Cllr Steven Purcell said: ‘We still need to do more to improve public transport throughout the city. ‘However, this is a welcome move in the right direction.’
