Bid to let kids travel free

Merseytravel could pilot a scheme of free bus travel for schoolchildren, if it gets government approval.

The group’s chair, Cllr Mark Dowd, has offered to pilot the scheme, and the idea is to be discussed at a meeting of the six passenger transport authorities in July.

PTA officers are now working out costs, and a bid will then be made to the Department for Transport to fund the scheme. Currently, children in Merseyside can only claim free travel if they live more than three miles from their school.
