Better access to Blackburn as engineers let things slide

A 26-strong team from Capita Symonds’ highway and infrastructure team took just over four hours to slide the new 800t Freckleton Street Bridge into position in Blackburn town centre.

The 25m £8M bridge, which replaces the previous four-span bridge which had been reduced to carrying just one lane of traffic, is due to open in June as part of the Blackburn orbital route, a £10m overhaul of all the major access routes into Blackburn town centre.

Demolition of the original bridge began in October 2006. Construction of the new bridge, which consists of a single-span, 78m-span steel bowstring arch with a steel/concrete composite deck carrying a dual carriageway, began in September last year.

The final section of the route will be the £4M section of road linking the bridge to Montague Street, which is not due to finish until at least 2009.
