Belts ready to tighten development alongside rivers and waterways

The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) has welcomed proposals by environment secretary, David Miliband, for the development of ‘turquoise belts’ alongside rivers and waterways, preventing developers from building homes and roads up to the edge of river banks.
Miliband argues that turquoise belts are more cost-effective and environmental than using hard engineering to insulate homes from flood risk.
CIWEM had recommended a similar ‘blue belt’ proposal, in which designated areas are developed as a valuable amenity for people and wildlife.
Nick Reeves, executive director of CIWEM, said: ‘CIWEM is pleased the Government is listening to recommendations that will make planners and developers consider climate change in their decision-making process.’
