Bells toll for bridge charges

Tolls will not be brought back to cover maintenance costs of the new Forth crossing, Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson has ‘guaranteed.’

The Scottish Government abolished the tolls on the Forth and Tay road bridges in February. In a parliamentary answer last week, Stevenson said the Government had given a commitment in the Abolition of Bridge Tolls Bill to end the ‘unfairness’ tolling caused, and they would not be brought back after the replacement bridge was built.

‘The Scottish Government is currently reviewing various funding options available for the Forth replacement crossing,’ Stevenson said. ‘I can provide a guarantee that users of the Forth replacement crossing will not be charged to use the bridge.’.
