Bedford bypass boost with DfT contribution

Bedfordshire County Council has received £2M from the Department for Transport towards the construction of the Bedford western bypass.

Work on the £24M highway is expected to start soon, but is still dependent on final land sale agreements. The new bypass, which is due to be completed in the summer of 2009, will be three miles long and link the A421 to the A428, bringing traffic congestion relief to Bedford, Kempston and other villages nearby.

Bedfordshire cabinet member for highways and waste, Cllr Tom Wootton, said: ‘We are pleased the Department for Transport recognises the importance of the bypass and has agreed to support the scheme financially. ‘Residents in and around Bedford have put up with congestion for too long and this bypass will bring relief for thousands of local people.’
