Beacon winners’ shining examples earn them a sparkling reward

Some 48 local authorities were last week announced as winners at this year’s Beacon awards ceremony, and took home a share of £3M of government funding as a reward.
The round eight awards, which celebrate successful and innovative services in local government, focused on 10 themes this year. These included delivering cleaner air, emergency planning, prevention and tackling of anti-social behaviour, and promoting sustainable communities.
Sheffield City Council, Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council, and the London Borough Councils of Croydon and Greenwich achieved delivering cleaner air Beacon status.
The £3M will go towards the councils’ active promotion of themes that were identified in this round, such as learning events and open days.
The Beacon scheme is funded by Communities and Local Government and run by the Improvement and Development Agency.
