Beacon celebrates shining examples of public space

This year’s Beacon awards for better public places went to Darlington, Sutton, Rotherham, Sheffield and Tynesdale councils.

The winners were announced last week at a ceremony at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London. The categories included better public places, improving accessibility, and tackling climate change. In the better public places category,

Darlington Borough Council was chosen for its ‘coherence of approach, including the link with active travel and access to green space’; the London Borough of Sutton for its strong emphasis on the environment; and Rotherham MBC for its dedication to the streetscene and quality public space.

The creation of Street Pride, incorporating all services responsible for Rotherham’s streetscene, has required ‘strong vision and leadership’ in instilling a culture change among staff.

Meanwhile, Sheffield was commended for its use of high-quality and bold design in the public realm, the high level of maintenance in the city centre, and the focus of higher deprivation. Tynesdale District Council was singled out for ‘responding to the challenges presented by a dispersed, rural area’.

Tynesdale’s leader, Cllr Michael Walton, said: ‘The council prides itself on being a guardian of the district’s very high-quality environment and in promoting quality public places in the district.’ The winners of the improving accessibility category were Lancashire, Greenwich, Merseyside PTA, Nottinghamshire, and Peterborough.

In Lancashire, ‘there is good linkage between the corporate accessibility direction of social inclusion and the transport orientated LTP work’.
