Bath splashes out as £350M SouthGate project gets underway

Work has started on Bath’s £350M SouthGate regeneration project, which will see the construction of a state-of-the-art transport interchange.
Contractor Multi Development UK announced this week that the scheme would be completed by 2010, 12 months ahead of schedule. The transport interchange, which will be operational by 2009, will include a £13M bus station with enhanced disabled and taxi parking facilities, access to Bath Spa railway station, and a new public space. The development also includes almost 38,000m2 of prime retail space, 3,500m2 of leisure space, more than 90 residential units, and basement parking for 724 cars. The SouthGate scheme is expected to create almost 1,000 permanent jobs, and 400 jobs during the construction period.
Paul Sargent, Multi Development’s UK managing director, said: ‘Today symbolises the beginning of the end of speculation surrounding Southgate. I’m delighted to announce the builders have now moved on site, which signifies the next phase in the development of Bath as a regional retail centre and international tourist destination.’ Work on the temporary bus station at Avon Street will begin immediately, bringing about closure of the existing bus station on Manvers Street.
