Barrier up for road charging

Shropshire County Council has ruled out introducing road charging as part of its transport innovation fund bid.

The council will submit a progress report to the Government by the end of the month, but for the time being, a road-charging scheme will not be pursued.

The council said it would look at alternative ways to reduce congestion and encourage use of more sustainable forms of transport. A full business case will be submitted to the Department for Transport in 2008, after public and stakeholder consultation in January.
