Barnsley rail engineers reach new heights with hoist of good ideas

Contractor VHE has installed a 110t rail bridge as part of the construction of the £15M contract for Cudworth and West Green bypass for Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

The 22m-long bridge was lifted into position by an 800t Demag AC700 crane on Saturday 6 June during a 28-hour rail possession.

The route of the 5.2km single carriageway bypass runs through the embankment underneath the existing single track rail line.

The long-awaited £21.2M bypass will reduce the amount of traffic, especially heavy goods vehicles, using the A628 through Cudworth, and improve access to local employment sites.

The 18-month programme started in November 2008, and also includes five roundabouts, a road bridge over the new road, three underpasses, and four box culverts up to 1,150m3 for water flow storage.
