Balancing act for Cotswold freight

A trial scheme that will re-route heavy goods vehicles away from villages and lanes in the Cotswolds has been implemented this month.

The scheme, which falls within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is part of Gloucestershire County Council’s ‘Freight management strategy’, which aims to balance the need to minimise the impact of freight movement and providing operators with a safe and efficient route network.

All vehicles will be restricted in the zone and any over 7.5t will be banned. Lorries will only be permitted to enter the zone if they are travelling on the A417/A419 HGV routes or if they are making deliveries or travelling from their operation base within the zone.

Cllr Stan Waddington, Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member for environment said: ‘The strategy was put in place to help industry as much as the residents.’
