Backing for tidal defence

The Environment Agency (EA) has revealed that its £8.4m tidal defence scheme for Shaldon and Ringmore has been given planning permission.

The scheme received unanimous support from planners at a meeting of Teignbridge DC’s development control committee. The work will raise 940 metres and rebuild 340 metres of existing foreshore walls, while a new 130 metre-long wall will be built at Shaldon beach.

Gordon Trapmore, the EA’s Devon and Cornwall flood risk manager, said: ‘We are confident that this is the right solution to reduce the risk of tidal flooding for this south Devon riverside community, and are pleased planning consent has been granted.’
