Backing for £20M integrated hub to boost prosperity

A £20M transport hub linking buses, ferries and trains, was given the go ahead by Transport Scotland this week.
The organisation hopes the plans for the transport interchange in Gourock will give a ‘massive boost’ to the town’s economic future. The interchange will provide a one-stop centre linking bus, rail and ferry, as well as improved cycling links, providing better transport connections for local residents.
A project team has been formed by Transport Scotland, supported by Inverclyde Council, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, First ScotRail and Network Rail. Construction is planned for the end of 2007, subject to planning and further local consultation. It is expected that work on redevelopment of the area could be completed in five years, by the end of 2012, but this will be subject to further detailed work and site investigation. The redevelopment will also mean relocation of the CalMac ferry services’ headquarters, and work will begin with the company to identify a new suitable site in the local area.
