Awards: Industry giants celebrate wins

Atkins, Amec and Alfred McAlpine, and Accord were among those gaining awards in this week’s inaugural Institution of Highways and Transportation awards designed to ‘celebrate and reward’ good work in the sector.
Atkins scooped two out of six of the awards, one for the ‘IHT award for technology’ for its service management centre’s use of technology to track maintenance emergency response works, a second shared with Northamptonshire in the ‘effective partnerships’ category. The success of the former in reducing accidents and driving down costs was recognised, while the judges noted the ‘trust and mutual respect’ and strong performance management of the latter.
A joint-venture between Amec and Alfred McAlpine to reuse concrete bridges on the M60 motorway gained the award for innovation. The scheme to lift, rotate and joining the decks of the bridges to fit a new, expanded carriageway alignment, and then strengthening them with foam concrete, was praised as ‘a unique and sustainable solution’.
Another structures project, Rotherham council’s in-house engineer-designed Highfield Lane Bridge scheme using ‘floating’ bankseat abutments was one of the runners-up in the innovation category.
Accord’s professionally-filmed DVD aimed at eliminating serious accidents during road repairs was declared ‘suitable for wider implementation in the industry’, as judges gave the contractor the health and safety award for its campaign to address complacency over the issue.
The Peter Brett Associates-designed Chester home zone – one of the largest in the country – got the environmental award for ‘completely transforming’ the area, while carrying out ‘high levels of consultation’.
Solihull and Buckinghamshire councils, meanwhile, won the two IHT/BP Bitumen awards for promoting road safety.
The awards were presented at a dinner held in the Science Museum in London. IHT president
David Hutchinson said the 164 entries from contractors, consultants and local authorities ‘proves how resourceful, imaginative and committed members of our profession are’.
