Avon planners call it a day as cost hikes hit crossing

Plans to build a pedestrian and cycling bridge over the River Avon in Stratford have been shelved, due to ‘substantially’ increased costs for the project.

Following a budget review, the decision was reached jointly by Warwickshire County Council, Stratford District Council and Advantage West Midlands.

The original estimate of £2M in 2005 has increased to £3.3M due to a combination of factors, including the need for additional flood-mitigation measures, construction ‘super-inflation’, and the increased world price of steel.

‘Neither the county nor district councils are in a position to fund the shortfall, so we have reluctantly decided to remove the bridge from the World Class Stratford programme,’ said Cllr Chris Saint, economic development portfolio holder for Warwickshire County Council.

Plans for a new bridge were originally put forward as part of the Waterfront Masterplan, and later adopted within phase one of World Class Stratford.
