Authority has designs on creating innovative river crossing

North Ayrshire Council has appointed URS Corporation to design a replacement for the Bailey Bridge in Irvine.

The appointment follows a community consultation last year to select a preferred option for the replacement bridge (right). The project requires the design of a single, 50m-span bridge over the River Irvine to replace the existing three-span Bailey Bridge on the A71 – a main arterial route to Irvine town centre.

Associate director of URS, Sandy Ross, said: ‘We are looking forward to working closely with North Ayrshire Council to improve the transportation needs of the local community.’ Until the bridge is replaced, regular inspection and maintenance works will continue to be carried out as required.
