Authority Tees-off to launch network upgrade

A proposal for a new metro system on the Tees Valley has been formally submitted for government approval.
Led by Tees Valley Regeneration, the bid is finally heading for the Department for Transport after decades in limbo. It has the support of the Tees Valley Partnership and the region’s five local authorities, which have all formally backed the scheme.
TVR believes the metro system – which would carry tram-trains – is vital to the economic recovery of the region, and that the business case is unquestionable. ‘The metro would raise our national profile, encourage inward investment and enhance quality of life,’ said Joe Docherty, chief executive of TVR.
The metro would run every 15 minutes, double the number of trains today, taking in five new stops, including Durham Tees Valley Airport.
Future stops could also include Hartlepool to the north, and Nunthorpe to the south. If the scheme gains approval next year, the metro could be operational within a decade. Councillor Ron Lowes, Middlesbrough’s executive member for transport, said: ‘A modern transport network is one of the mayor’s four pillars for a successful Middlesbrough, and this project can play a key role in enhancing public transport, the local economy and the environment.’
