All county and single-tier councils have met or exceeded the minimum requirements of government inspectors for managing their finances effectively.
Three-quarters of the 150 councils exceeded the Audit Commission’s minimum requirements on financial reporting, management, internal control, and value for money. But the commission warned that continued improvements would be needed if council finances got tighter, as suggested by the chancellor’s December pre-Budget report.
