Authorities expected to respond to access move

All Wales’ 16 coastal local authorities are expected to come forward with proposals for improving access paths on the coastline.
The Countryside Council for Wales is pleased at the response from local authorities to the Welsh Assembly’s six-year programme to improve existing paths and create 80km of new access for pedestrians.
Jont Bulbeck, access section head, told Surveyor: ‘We’ve had a very positive response. We’re expecting all 16 authorities to put proposals in, with bids for funding.’
Initially, work would focus on improving existing paths. The more challenging task of negotiating new access with landowners would come later, he said.
In this financial year, £1.5M was available and a further £1M in 2008/09.
In future, some of the funding might be used to compensate landowners, but initially, it was likely to be spent on infrastructure development, such as improvements to surfaces, signage, bridges and gates.
Bulbeck stressed that the aim was not just to provide continuous public access to a 2km strip of coast, but to create new circular walks, and paths for cyclists and horse riders. It is also intended that 10% of paths will be made suitable for use by disabled people.
