Authorities awarded cash to stamp out tacky problem

Sixteen councils have won the chance to run local advertising campaigns aimed at reducing chewing gum litter in their areas.
The advertising will be paid for by the Chewing Gum Action Group, and follows the success of last year’s ‘Thanks for binning your gum, when you’re done’ promotion, which led to average reduction of chewing gum litter of 38% – although one area achieved a 72% reduction.
Forty councils submitted bids to stage the campaigns, which will be run in Bedford, Blackpool, Braintree, Brighton and Hove, Bristol, Canterbury, Colchester, Enfield, Gosport, Kirklees, Leeds, Mansfield, Middlesbrough, Oxford, Test Valley and Wolverhampton during August and September using new campaign visuals, posters, and other promotional activities. Local environment quality minister, Ben Bradshaw, said: ‘Dropping gum on pavements is an incredibly anti-social activity which blights our public spaces – and that can be expensive for those who have to clear up the mess.
