Authorities awarded £319M grant to get the right treatment

Waste-management projects in Norfolk, south London and Hertfordshire have been awarded £319M of private-finance initiative funding.

The Government has awarded £115.3M to Hertfordshire County Council; £91M to Norfolk County Council; and £112.9M to the South London Waste Partnership – comprising of Croydon, Kingston, Sutton and Merton councils.

Norfolk will now invite companies to put forward their bids to build and operate a facility with the capacity to treat up to 155,000t of household waste each year which currently goes to landfill. It is keeping its options open on the best waste-treatment solution.

‘When we tender for the waste-treatment facility, we will assess what different proposals are capable of, as well as how much they cost,’ said cabinet member for waste management, Ian Monson.

In south London, the PFI funding will contribute 50% towards the cost of building a new treatment facility. This will enable the partnership to treat more than 200,000t of waste a year which would otherwise have been sent to landfill. The tendering process is set to begin this spring.

Chair of the South London Waste Partnership, Cllr Derek Osbourne, said: ‘The funding will provide a huge opportunity for us to work for a cleaner, greener and more sustainable south London.’

Hertfordshire’s waste management project has the potential to divert up to 170,000t of waste from landfill a year.
