Assembly fears over second Stansted runway

The Highways Agency is consulting on plans to widen the M11 between the M25 and Stansted (junctions 6 to 8) as part of a strategy to improve transport links ahead of the expansion of London’s third airport.
Airport operator BAA has launched a wider 14-week consultation on requirements for road and rail access, once the second runway is open, expected to be in 2015.
BAA’s proposals include measures to reduce the growth in car travel to the airport, new and improved bus services, and local road diversions.
The East of England Regional Assembly offered an ambivalent response to the HA consultation, saying it welcomed a move to tackle congestion, but believes improvements should not be dependent on building a second runway at Stansted.
The assembly is opposed to the building of a second runway at Stansted, citing the unjustifiable and significant adverse environmental impacts, particularly in terms of carbon emissions and climate change.
Councillor John Reynolds, chair of the assembly’s regional planning panel, said: ‘Congestion on the roads is a real issue which is why the assembly is pushing for more funding from the Government to improve the transport infrastructure.
‘While we welcome any study that seeks to address congestion, we can only point out that adding a second runway at Stansted Airport is likely to exacerbate the situation on roads.’
