Approval expected for new urban park

Plans for the first new urban park to be developed in Birmingham for more than 125 years are set to get the green light.

On Monday, Birmingham City Council’s cabinet will be asked to set a £13m budget and appoint contractor Wates Construction for the new Eastside City Park.

The park has been a key proposal for Eastside since the regeneration project began in 1999. It will provide a centrepiece for the area with 3.2ha of green space, and is an integral part of Birmingham’s ‘Big city’ plan.

Cllr Neville Summerfield, cabinet member for regeneration, said: ‘The park will support our standing as a global city, providing a space for local people and visitors around which high-quality developments are already taking shape. The park will also act as a focus for the world-class attractions that are being developed within Eastside.’
