The 1985 Transport Act radically changed the nature of the bus market by privatising companies and deregulating services outside London.

The main aim was to introduce competition to help revive the fortunes of an industry that had been in decline ever since the 1950s and the rise of cars. Among many transport experts it is regarded as a failure.
