‘Amend bus funding’ call

The Draft Local Transport Bill may not improve bus services without a reform of the funding services, the Association of Transport Co-ordinating Officers has claimed.

ATCO chair, Bob Saxby, said allowing local transport authorities to determine how the £2bn-a-year bus service operator grant was spent would allow local travel needs to be more closely matched to resources, and cut red tape.

‘Operators would only have to talk to local authorities, rather than talking to us about co-ordination, and then separately contact Whitehall about funding,’ said Saxby.
