Alternatives ‘being considered’ for Olympic provision

The Olympic transport boss insists that two major park-and-ride sites have not been discarded as part of preparations for the 2012 games, but ‘better’ alternatives are being considered to provide a lasting legacy for the Southeast.
Hugh Sumner, director of transport at the Olympic Development Authority, was responding to a question before the Commons transport committee over plans to avoid games gridlock.
Labour MP Clive Efford asked whether the ODA was putting ‘all its eggs in one basket’ by discarding two major park-and-ride sites, one at the M11 and one at the M25, south of the river.
Sumner replied that ‘we are reviewing the park-and-ride sites to see if we can provide a better solution which leaves a better legacy for London and the Southeast and provides higher value for money. We have not discarded them.’
Elsewhere, Wandsworth London Borough Council has warned that the public transport legacy left by the 2012 Olympics will be minimal.
Guy Senior, executive member for planning and transportation, said: ‘South London once again comes off worst. People here may see no lasting legacy from any of the major public transport infrastructure improvements.
‘The only new project in south London – the East London line link to West Croydon – was being provided anyway.’
