Alliance publishes local edition of Traffic signs manual

The 3 Counties Alliance Partnership (3CAP) has launched a localised version of part of the Highways Agency’s Traffic signs manual.

Chapter 8 of the manual is currently the only formal guidance available to local authorities on the deployment of temporary traffic management associated with work on the public highway.

This manual, however, is more geared to motorways and trunk roads than local roads.

Following
Nottinghamshire County Council’s decision to locally review its temporary traffic-management arrangements, a new guidance document was produced on a joint basis through the 3CAP arrangement.

All three counties in the alliance can now benefit from a standardised code of practice, for use on the local road network.
The new document, The code of practice for temporary traffic management at road works, is the first of its kind in the UK.
It took more than 12 months to produce and cost the counties a combined £38,000. As a collaborative project, this has saved the authorities around £21,000.

Based on interest expressed so far in this work, it is hoped some of the cost will be recouped through subsequent sharing of the information with other authorities and contractors.

Formed in July 2007, 3CAP is a partnership between Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire county councils, and business consultant, Scott Wilson.
