The Gloucester southwest bypass project has taken a major step forward as a newly-diverted section of the Gloucester-Sharpness canal was filled with water. The canal was diverted to enable a new swing bridge with a 4.7m clearance to be built, enabling the majority of boats to pass underneath to minimise the need for it to open and disrupt traffic.
