All-Ireland free travel plan

Pensioners in Northern Ireland will be able to travel for free anywhere within the island after an agreement with the Republic’s Government.

Northern Ireland secretary, Peter Hain has announced plans for an all-Ireland free bus and rail travel scheme after talks with the Irish foreign affairs minister Dermot Ahern. Since 1995 Northern Ireland senior citizens have been eligible for free travel to or from single destinations in the Republic of Ireland, while senior citizens from the Republic enjoy a similar concession in Northern Ireland.

Agreement in principle has been reached to extend the arrangement from April next year. A public consultation will run until 1 September.
