Airport technology to keep bridges ice-free is a run way success

New anti-ice sprayers are to operate on two suspension bridges over the River Severn, after InterRoute acquired the units from Schmidt UK.
The two 8,000-litre capacity sprayers have borrowed their design from proven airport technology to ensure the most effective treatment, according to Schmidt. The units have specially-designed jets and nozzles to ensure the treatment liquid can be accurately directed – and controlled from within the driver’s cab – to cover up to all three lanes in a single pass, and at speeds of up to 50kph.
The driver/operator adjusts the spray direction so that narrower areas, such as slip roads, and the wider areas around the toll booths, can be treated. InterRoute is a joint venture contractor for road maintenance on the Highways Agency’s Area 2.
