Air of failure hits Olympic venues

A coalition of cross-party MPs and industry experts have exposed the London Olympics’ failure to fulfil its commitment to tackle harmful emissions from construction machines used on site.

The campaign is calling on the Olympics site in east London, and other major construction projects, to ensure that the most polluting equipment used on site is fitted with suitable pollution-control technology – thereby reducing particulate emissions by at least 85%.

The Olympic Delivery Authority’s sustainable development strategy includes a commitment to implementing recommendations in the Best practice guidance. However, with construction on the London site well under way, there is no sign that this rhetoric has been backed with action.

Danny Stevens, policy director at the Environmental Industries Commission, said: ‘Implementation of the guidance will ensure construction of the Olympics has a minimal impact on the health of local people.’
